Dussehra is celebrated on the tenth day of Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month. Dussehra festival is celebrated with enthusiasm and religious devotion all over India. Dussehra is celebrated every year commemorating the incident of killing of the unrighteous Ravana by the incarnation of Vishnu.

What is the religious significance of Dussehra?

It is believed that on this day Shri Rama ji got victory of Truth over untruth by killing Ravana, since then this day became famous as Vijayadashami or Dussehra. On Dussehra, effigies of Ravana-Kumbhakarna and Meghnath are burnt at various places.

According to Goddess Bhagwat, on this day, maa Durga defeated the demon named Mahishasura and liberated the gods, hence idols of maa Durga are specially worshiped on the day of Dashami.

Many other stories related to Dussehra are also found in the Puranas and scriptures. But the essence of all is that Dussehra festival symbolizes the victory of truth over untruth.

It is also believed that the nine days of Navaratri are classified by three qualities: Tamas Rajas and Sattva. The first three days are associated with Tamas, in which fierce women like Kali and Durga come. The next three days are related to maa Lakshmi.

And the last three days are related to maa Saraswati who signifies Sattva. Dussehra comes on the tenth day after the end of Navaratri. This means that man has conquered the three qualities of Navaratri. Because man understood these three qualities but did not surrender to any of the qualities, that’s why the tenth day is called the day of victory or Vijayadashami. This proves that by paying due attention and gratitude to the important matters of our life, we can achieve success and victory.

When is Dussehra this year?

This year Dussehra will be celebrated on 8 October 2019. This Dussehra Vijay Muhurta is from 01 to 58 minutes from 02 to 43 minutes. During this, worshiping Aparajita is considered auspicious. It is believed that the work was undertaken during Vijay Muhurta always results in inauspicious results.
